54 smiling women from the parishes of Kristus Aman, Jesus Caritas and some other churches in the archdiocese could not hide their delight as they alighted from the bus, obviously happy to arrive at the Methodist Centre, Port Dickson for their Women of Virtue Retreat. This year’s retreat was organised by our Women’s Desk team jointly with the Women’s Desk of St. Francis of Assisi.
Many of the participants had been attending our retreats regularly over the past 5 years but there were also several first-timers who came without any expectations just hoping to make friends, enjoy the fellowship and gain some spiritual insights for their journey of faith. At the end of the weekend from 26th to 28th October, they shared very inspiring testimonies how they had reaped insights for their spiritual growth, as they listened to the gifted speakers namely: Fr. Sebastian Arputharaj, OFM; Fiona Biggs; Margaret Lye and a zero-waste advocate Seet Huay Ping.
Adding to the theme for the retreat, Women of Virtue gleaned from Proverbs 31, ideas to bring across how women can use their initiative to become trail blazers in promoting Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si and save the world by living a zero-waste lifestyle was energetically delivered by Seet Huay Ping, a passionate advocate of this sustainable life style. To cut down on the use of paper cups, each lady was encouraged to bring her own cup which was later used in a reflective meditation for spiritual growth based on Joyce Rupp’s Cup of Life. The programme was planned in such a way that there was a blend of spiritual talks, praise and worship, prayers, reflection, sharing in discussion groups and a night of fun where the ladies could just let their hair down and be themselves as they creatively acted out their skits and danced to lively music. Everyone from the oldest 79 year old to the youngest, a 12 year old girl who came with her mum, enjoyed the night’s programme “Go Green”, with the sporting ladies dressed in all shades of green. One even donned a green wig to complete her ensemble whilst another innovative lady dressed as a farmer, complete with hat sans cangkul.
Many shared that the retreat made an impact in their lives and have expressed the wish to attend again the next year.
